The Samurai Military Forces

Government:

The Daimyo:

is the Lord of the Lands and the one who oversees everything. The Fuedal Lord is responsible for the territory that they reside over. The economy and its people is also dependant on the Daiymo of that territory to provide. As one would expect this position is very important, since they are the head of the Government. The Daimyo in most cases will have a strong military background. This means they’re considered powerful warriors, but that is not always the case. The Daimyo is expected to be diplomatic and in some instances a warrior, may not be capable of such.
Lower Government:

(Code of the Samurai)

"Fate is in Heaven, the armor is on the breast, success is with the legs. Go to the battlefield firmly confident of victory, and you will come home with no wounds whatever. Engage in combat fully determined to die and you will be alive; wish to survive in the battle and you will surely meet death. When you leave the house determined not to see it again you will come home safely; when you have any thought of returning you will not return. You may not be in the wrong to think that the world is always subject to change, but the warrior must not entertain this way of thinking, for his fate is always determined. "

Bushido Code:

  • Rectitude (義, gi?) to be truthful in words and action, to be honest and have integrity

Courage (勇, yuu?) The ability to do things which one finds frightening.

Benevolence (仁, jin?) a want to do good

Respect (礼, rei?) To be considerate of others.

Honesty (誠, makoto or 信 shin?) to be truthful

Honour (誉, yo?) having dignity, and a good reputation

Loyalty (忠, chuu?) faithful to those who you serve

Associated Virtues

  • Filial piety (孝, kō?) above all virtues to respect those above you and those who came before you.

Wisdom (智, chi?) a deep understanding of people, things, events or situations, empowering the ability to choose or act to consistently produce the optimum results with a minimum of time and energy.

Care for the aged (悌, tei?) need i say more care for the elderly.

Ranks

Sounin/Sotaicho:

The Sounin is just as important and holds the same position as any Kage of the 5 Great Nations would. They’re directly in charge of the Military and its well being. The General may also have his/her orders delegated by the Daiymo. But it is not very often that the Daiymo would interfere unless absolutely necessary. The Sounin generally possess great strength and is expected to be a Leader. This Leader may even be closer to the people than a Daiymo would. It all depends, but either way the Sounin is generally the most powerful of the lower Government. Those that have attained this level will generally wield up to 8 Swords. They’re very skilled in the Art of Kenjutsu, Weaponry and Taijutsu even. The Sounin’s authority over the people is only exceeded by the Daimyo.

Kyuunin:

A Kyuunin is the Samurai’s equivalent of the Shinobi’s Jounin. These are generally very highly skilled warriors. They are of great importance to the Samurai’s military strength. The Kyuunins may sometime hail from a Noble family, although not always the case. The Kyuunin class are known to command several Units consisting of warriors. They’re the Generals beneath the Sounin, with only the Sounin and Daimyo exceeding their authority. The Kyuunin may wield 6-8 Swords at a time.

Gashira:

The Gashira of the Samurai Military class, often act as the equivalent of the Shinobi Anbu. There will often be a Head of the Unit, whether it is foot soldiers or a Bowmen Unit. The Gashira act as the connection between the other ranks of the Samurai class. The will often carryout the will of the Sounin and some Kyuunins too. The Gashira unit ranges from Swordsmen to Bowmen or even a combination of both. At this stage of the Military, tactics will become very important to the Samurai. The Gashira will wield anywhere from 2-4 Swords and even the Bow. A Gashira’s skill level however doesn’t compare to that of a Kyuunin.

Chugen:

The Chugen are the Shinobi’s equivalent of the Genin and Chuunin ranks. In the Samurai Military they’re considered in between, because their skill level varies. There are Elite Chugen who are considered to be the Chuunin of this rank. Regular Chugens are considered to be the Genins of this rank. The Chugen will often acts as a special attendant to the Samurai. As such they will live in servitude to the Kyuunin and Sounins. The Kyuunin and Sounin will act as their masters and will often train them. A Chugen will often wield anywhere between 1-2 Swords. Regular Chugen one weapon and the elite two.

Other Ranks:

Ronin:

A Rounin will range anywhere from a Gashira to a Sounin in rank. They’re the Samurai’s equivalent of a wandering Ninja. There skill level will depend entirely on considered level, whether it be Gashira to Kyuunin. A Rounin may very will be affiliated with the Samurai. And may even act as field agents to the Samurai class.

Sohei:

A Shoei is often seen as a warrior monk, there is not a lot of information on this class of warriors. But they are though to be quite skilled with varying skill level of course.
